Special Meeting on Promotion of Pulses in NEH Region & State Level Farmers Meet on Promotion of Pulses in Tripura organized by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region and ICAR-Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur, during 19-20 September, 2016, at Agartala, Tripura

Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Govt. of India are giving top most priority towards enhancing pulses productivity and production in the country. Pulse production in North Eastern region in particular exhibited relatively lower inherent growth in pulse production due to many intricate factors such as soil, climate, technological and extension related tribulations. Poor soil health attributed to soil acidity, aluminum toxicity, undulated topography and sloppy terrains. The low pH, high rainfall, water stagnation are major abiotic constraints, whereas pests and diseases are major biotic constraints in the region affecting adversely the production of pulses in the region. Therefore, for enhancing production of pulses in eight North eastern states viz., Assam, Aurnachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim and making them self reliant, renewed efforts are needed by all the stake holders coherently and consistently.

In NEH region, among pulses peas, lentil and lathyrus are important during rabi, while urdbean, rajmash, ricebean, and pigionpea occupy major area in kharif. Some niche areas and new avenues requiring focus include area expansion in hilly slopes and rice fallows, bridging the yield gap by releasing location specific pulses verities, improved agro techniques, self reliance in seed by involving farmers participation in seed production. Potential of North East region is immense and is being projected as the area for ushering the second green revolution.

With this background special efforts are initiated for promotion of pulses in NE region by ICAR-IIPR in collaboration with ICAR-ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Central Agriculture University, Assam Agricultural University, other Agricultural Colleges in the region and the State Agriculture departments of all the states. In this connection – the 3rd Special Meeting on Promotion of Pulses in NEH region was organized during 19-20 September, 2016 by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Tripura Centre jointly with ICAR-IIPR, Kanpur. The Special meeting was combined with State level Farmers Meet on Promotion Pulses in Tripura.
